Job Summary:

As a Designer you have to develop new garment designs, styles, color combinations, prints, patterns and collections as per market trends, customer requirements and company brand standards, while ensuring that designs are commercially viable and suitable for production.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

A. Design & Product Development

  • Create new garment designs and styles as per seasonal and market requirements.
  • Develop design concepts, sketches and mood boards.
  • Prepare new collections according to the company's product category and brand identity.
  • Work on new styles, patterns, prints, color combinations and fabric selections.
  • Modify existing designs based on customer or management requirements.
  • Develop designs that are both attractive and commercially feasible.

B. Trend Research

  • Research current fashion and apparel trends.
  • Study competitor products, market trends and customer preferences.
  • Identify upcoming colors, fabrics, prints, silhouettes and styling trends.
  • Prepare trend boards and collection concepts.

C. Technical & Production Coordination

  • Coordinate with the production, merchandising, sampling and quality teams.
  • Prepare or coordinate preparation of technical specifications, measurements and design details.
  • Ensure the design can be practically manufactured.
  • Resolve design-related issues during sampling and production.
  • Review samples and suggest necessary modifications.

D. Fabric, Color & Accessories

  • Select suitable fabrics according to the design and product requirement.
  • Suggest appropriate colors, prints, trims, buttons, zippers, labels and other accessories.
  • Coordinate with the purchase/production team regarding fabric and accessory availability.
  • Ensure selected materials are suitable for the intended garment.

E. Sampling & Approval

  • Develop designs for proto/sample development.
  • Review samples against the approved design.
  • Identify discrepancies in color, fitting, construction, print, embroidery or finishing.
  • Provide corrections and obtain approval before bulk production.
  • Maintain records of approved designs and samples.

F. Design Software

  • Create and modify designs using relevant design software such as:
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • CorelDRAW
  • CLO 3D or other apparel-design software, where applicable.
  • Maintain digital design files systematically.

G. Cost & Commercial Awareness

  • Develop designs keeping production cost and target selling price in mind.
  • Avoid unnecessary design elements that increase production cost without adding sufficient value.
  • Coordinate with merchandising and production teams to achieve the required cost and quality.

H. Documentation

  • Maintain design files, sketches, artwork and technical details.
  • Maintain records of samples, approvals and design revisions.
  • Ensure proper version control of designs.
  • Maintain seasonal/collection-wise design records.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of garment construction and apparel design.
  • Good understanding of fabrics, colors, prints and trims.
  • Knowledge of fashion and market trends.
  • Good sketching and creative skills.
  • Knowledge of garment measurements and basic technical specifications.
  • Proficiency in relevant design software.
  • Good communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work under deadlines.
  • Commercial understanding of garment production.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving and creative-thinking ability.

Educational Qualification

  • Diploma/Degree in Fashion Designing, Apparel Designing, Textile Designing or a related field.
  • Relevant garment-industry experience will be an advantage.
